Dog Food: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

9 May

Today more than ever, it’s SO important to read the labels of Dog food. With recalls surfacing throughout the industry more people are wary of what they are feeding their pets. There are a few things that are easy to look for and make sure to eliminate from your cat or dogs diet.  The most important is making sure there is…

NO : Corn, Wheat, Soy, By-Products (Meat or otherwise), Artificial Dyes, Artificial Preservatives, Artificial Flavors, Sugars or Sweeteners.

The next step would be to make sure that the food starts with a named source of whole meat as the first ingredient (meaning the product contains more of that ingredient by weight than anything else).

Make sure any source of animal protein or fat is named.  Whether it’s a muscle tissue where it would appear on the label as chicken, beef, venison, etc. or an organ meat where it would be listed as chicken liver, beef heart, etc. A high quality food will always list exactly what meat protein is in the food. If it is not listed, don’t use it because you will have no idea what the meat is or where the meat came from.

Next if the food contains any grains, and I say “if” because I believe the biologically appropriate diet for a cat or a dog as carnivores, is a grain-free diet mainly meat based diet, if the diet contains any grains, make sure that they are whole high quality grains like oats, quinoa, brown rice, etc. Not anything like corn.

Another thing that is always good to make sure of is that the ingredients that are being used are regional credible sources.  All high-quality pet food companies can and will tell you exactly where each ingredient came from in their food. Asking is always recommended so that you know exactly where your pets food is coming from and knowing its safe.

Lastly making sure the diet is “complete and balanced” is important.  You can be sure of this by finding it marked on the bag. It will say that it meets the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) regulations and standards for a complete balanced diet.

No matter what a package reads on the front of the package, ALWAYS read the ingredient panel and make sure you are getting a high quality biologically appropriate diet for your cat or dog. By following these initial steps, you will be on your way to a happier, healthier animal. This diagram below shows very clearly, the good, the bad and the ugly of dog food. If you’re feeding Beneful, Pedigree or Purina, I strongly encourage you to change your dogs food. You don’t have to break the bank to feed quality, a lot of the times it breaks down to a few cents more per serving, and that’s it. Also, remember that when feeding quality you simply don’t have to feed as much.
